The secret to happiness lies precisely in appreciating the simple things, the everyday blessings; a beautiful sunrise, a home cooked meal, laughing with your husband, your kids visit’s, a walk in nature, a chat with a friend, a really robust cup of coffee, a hug, a kiss…

The problem is we are often anxious and stressed thinking about the future, or full of regret, and resentment from being stuck in the past, so we miss the present moment, which is the only place where real happiness resides.

The most basic of things, which is being present in the now, has become a real challenge for most people these days, and the technology we hold in our hands has only made it worse. Instead of living the moment, it must be photographed and shared, so that others may “like” the moment you just missed. It is texting people who are sitting in the exact same room as we are. It is searching this and looking up that. It is sleeping with the very technology, right next to our pillow, that is destroying happiness.

Time to bring awareness back. Breathing work is a great way to get in the present, especially when you detect your mind is not here and now. Simply focusing on inhaling and exhaling for a few seconds, you can bring yourself back to the present moment, which is actually where life happens, so don’t miss it!

Your loved ones will really appreciate your full presence and you will be able to appreciate the simple things that life offers – to those that pay attention.

In a world where we are bombarded 24/7 with marketing gimmicks designed to create unnecessary needs and desires, and “news” that is only negative,  it is time to go back to the basics, for it is in the basics that true, lasting happiness lies.
